Under Wisconsin drunk driving laws, driving under the influence of any intoxicant is termed OWI: Operating While Under the Influence. Wisconsin also uses the acronym OMVWI for Operating a Motor Vehicle While Intoxicated. This is frequently called DUI for Driving Under the Influence.

Wisconsin law states that the intoxicating agent can be any alcohol, illegal drugs like marijuana, cocaine or hallucinogen, and may even be a prescription or over-the-counter drugs.

Fines, forfeitures, jail and revocation and suspension penalties can be doubled if a person under 16 years of age or a pregnant woman was in the vehicle at the time of the offense. Plus, your driver's license can be revoked for five years, and your vehicle can be equipped with an ignition interlock device (IID).

If the offense is committed while operating a commercial motor vehicle under the influence, the penalties may also include a one-year disqualification of your Commercial Drivers License (CDL), or a lifetime disqualification for a second offense since July 1, 1987.
